"I don't know what everyone else thinks, but to me it seems like it has been a really long, dreary winter. The unusual amounts of snow hampering our journeys, the sub-zero temperatures and the lack of people out on the street have all culminated in a feeling of general lethargy. So what a nice surprise to be asked to go and sample the food at Matlock's newest restaurant, an Italian called 'Viva'.
Most of you will remember this place as the old Motorist Discount Centre on Dale Road in Matlock. Wow! What a transformation. It is now ultra modern and sleek, a lovely room of black and white, stainless steel, wood and glass. The kitchen is totally open so you can see all that is going off, and if you are really lucky, maybe your own meal being prepared.
Owner, Manesh is the head chef and he too can be seen hard at work in this pristine showcase. Manesh brings with him a wealth of experience in the restaurant trade, previously owning two successful restaurants in the Nottinghamshire area.
On arrival we were quickly shown to our table by our waiter, Nigel, who immediately took our drinks order. We also accepted his offer of a jug of iced drinking water to complement our wine. A nice touch I thought, and quite an Italian custom.
There is a really good selection for each of the different courses on the menu, so much so that it took us a good while to make up our minds. All the old Italian favourites are there, but also a few surprises. It didn't help when wonderful looking pizzas were delivered to the next table – what a dilemma!
In the end Peter chose Polpette Picante to start, home-made Italian meatballs in a spicy tomato sauce with dough balls and parmesan. I had Funghi con Spinacio, button mushrooms stuffed with spinach, cooked in the oven with Napoli sauce and parmesan cheese. Both were delicous and we sent back two very clean plates.
For the main course Peter decided on the Filleto alla griglia, a 9oz prime fillet served with fried mushrooms and grilled tomato. My husband Peter has a bit of a thing about steaks. If a restaurant can't serve a decent steak, then he believes that they shouldn't be in business. He likes them plain, tasty in their own right, i.e. not smothered in sauce, and of course very tender. Fortunately this one passed on all counts, and yet again another empty plate.
I chose to have the Branzino for my main course: grilled sea bass, finished in the oven with rosemary, lemon and a touch of garlic. The fish tasted beautiful and it was served on a bed of rocket with a very colourful salad garnish and a lemon sauce on the side.
Quite rightly so in an Italian restaurant, there is a bit of an ice cream theme to the dessert menu. I was extremely full by this time but persuaded by Manesh, I decided to go for the Coppa Cioccolato, vanilla ice cream rippled with chocolate cream swirls, whilst Peter chose home-made pancake filled with Italian ice cream which arrived at the table looking spectacular in a coating of flaming Sambuca. Both were beautifully presented and tasted divine. We rounded the evening off with a good strong espresso, mints and a little belt loosening.
It is really good to see a new business emerge after this miserable recession. Viva offers lovely, reasonably priced food in beautiful modern surroundings, so why not give it a try - buon appetito!"
